VAASTU SHAASTRA is an ancient art of correct settings whereby one can benefit of the panchabhutas (Aakaasha- Space [Sound] Vaayu- Air [Touch], Agnee- Fire [Form], Jaal- Water [Taste], Bhumi- Earth [Shabda], as well as the influence of magnet fields surrounding the earth. Followers of Vaastu Shaastra get not only worldly pleasures but also exprience heavenly bliss. The inerplay and independence of these forces, having contradicting and repelling nature between themselves and the operation of invisible equation between there is beyond scientist's manipulative ability.

The ancient mystical art of Chinese geomancy is now attracting growing interest. It is known as Feng Shui and refers to the "feel" of a place. Characters for "Feng" and "Shui" signify wind and water. It is a complex blend of commen sense, logic, reason, ancient traditions and wisdom. The purpose of this art is to create and ensure environmental harmony to enhance inner peace, which leads to happiness, pesonal success and good fortune.

There are two main classes. The first involves the flow of chi ( life force ). Favorable currents enter by the main enterance and leave by the rear enterance or a window, ideally passing through each room. The second involves restoring imbalance of the five elements; wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Feng Shui design should achieve harmoney between the occupant and the natural world outside.

The drawings accompanying this article show the general Vaastu Shaastra/Feng Shui rules that can be applied to all dwellings to avoid negative influences of "bad" Feng Shui. The drawing labeled "Existing Floor Plan" violates some of the rules, while furnishings in the "Vaastu Shaastra/Feng Shui Floor Plan" accentuate Feng Shui harmoney and peace. Going from room to room, here are some tips on how to arrange your funiture to promote harmony with the natural environment.

BEDROOM

  • Beds should be placed so a sleeper can see who enters, or a mirror should be placed to reflect an intruder.
  • The foot of a bed must not face the door, or it imitates the ancient Chinese custom of placing the dead with their feet toward the door.
  • Beds should not be placed under beams or sloping ceilings, because they create anxiety.
  • Beds should be placed against a wall. Lest the sleeper feel unstable in life.

KITCHEN:

  • The sink and refrigerator should be separated from the stove to avoid conflict between water and fire.
  • A screen should be placed in front of a staircase facing the front door, to deflect the entrance of negative feng shui.

BATHROOM:

  • Bathrooms signify water and should be placed away from the kitchen, which is fire. Water and fire cannot exist in harmony.
  • Bathroom should also be placed away from the front door, as the good fortune, which enters through the door, should not pass into the bathroom where it can be flushed away.

DINING AREA:

  • Dining tables should be round, because a circle means heaven, while rectangles symbolize the lesser earth.

There should be an even number of at least four dinning chairs, meaning luck. A single chair means loneliness.

LIVING ROOM:

  • Lounge seats should not from a triangle pointing toward the bedroom, as this is like shooting an arrow at the sleeper.

STUDY:

  • Desks should not face the window, but be oriented so light comes from the left. Eyestrain disturbs internal harmony.
